Miguel
Rodriguez discovered the guitar at age five. This led to an exploration
of the folk music of Mexico and Latin America, a pastime encouraged
by his father and family who noted his early interest and ability.
At age ten, this ability had matured sufficiently that Miguel was
performing in public, appearing with his sister and her husband
in ethnic and variety shows. At age twelve, Miguel discovered flamenco
music, the study of which soon became a consuming passion. As is
traditional for artists in the genre, he spent every free moment
studying recordings of the music for which printed methods were
so rare; three years of this single-minded effort led to Miguel's
emergence as one of the leading guitarists -- and certainly one
of the youngest -- in his native city, San Antonio, Texas.
Apart from his fascination with flamenco, Miguel studied music theory
and mastered the cornet in school, classical venues which established
a dual musical personality in his youth which persists to this day,
a relatively rare occurrence in the world of the guitar where artists
are usually dedicated exclusively to one or the other medium.
Considering himself primarily self-taught, Miguel attributes much
of his artistry to the close association and friendships he developed
among leading musicians and composers. In early adulthood, Miguel
began to appear on the national scene, working with various artists
and continuing his observation of other guitarists and their styles.
By his late twenties, he was able to devote himself exclusively
to performance, as an accompanist with ensembles and as a soloist.
Recitals in several Texas cities, appearances with the Houston Pops
Orchestra and other music events of note led to wide spread interest
in Miguel by artists and companies across America.
Miguel has toured the U.S., Canada and Europe and performed repeat
engagements with such notable companies as The Jose Molina Ballet
Espanol, The Jose Greco Spanish Dance Co. and The Maria Benitez
Estampa Flamenca. In Spain, his extensive travels in pursuit of
guitar artistry and inspiration have led him to every major gathering
spot for luminaries of the genre: Madrid, Cordoba, Sevilla, Granada.
This infusion of traditionalism and openness to the newest and most
innovative of musical trends has led to Miguel's current stature
in the art, that of a classical-flamenco guitarist who brings a
wealth of classical expertise to ethnic music and the emotionality
of ethnic music to classical technique.
Pepe Romero of the famed Romero Guitar Quartet has written of Miguel
Rodriguez: "Miguel is a guitarist of great technical ability
and stands among the best flamenco musicians I have known."
Now living humbly in Phoenix, AZ, Miguel is considered by many to
be one of the finest flamenco guitarists alive today.
