Flamenco!
The song, dance, and music of Andalusia, Spain, is a blend of
Gypsy cultures. Through travel, the northern Indian Gypsies
assimilated the cultures of the Middle East. Arriving in Spain,
they blended their culture with that of the native Spaniards,
whose culture was already influenced by the Moors and Jews.
This blend is the strength and subtleness of Flamenco music
and dance. |
| Unlike Spanish group dances which follow verse and chorus,
Flamenco dances are based on the individual's use and interpretation
of the rhythm (compas). It is traditionally performed as a solo,
but has been adapted to theater and clubs. Today, our
basic show consists of a guitarist and three dancers
and may be expanded to include a total of four musicians and
four dancers. Professional sound and lighting are important
to the enjoyment of the performance. |

Flamenco dance is like the Flamenco's way of life - a communal
experience where there is no division between entertainer and
dancer. Flamenco was never meant to be performed for an audience.
It was a sharing of life's experiences held privately among
close family groups to celebrate, or mourn. It has developed
over the centuries into the art form that it is today - and
it continues to evolve. But at its core, it is and always will
be, the soul of a people. |
